Wellbeing: Nutrition

Updated: Nov 4, 2021

Did you know that what we eat doesn’t just affect our physical health? Diet directly impacts how we’re feeling too…

🍎🥕🥦

We all know the struggle is real when we’re on a long shift and trying not to reach for the bag of sweets at the nurses’ station. At the time that sugar rush just seems to be the hit you need to keep going!

This #WellbeingWednesday we’re challenging you to take a minute to think about how nutrition at work could be affecting your mood and general wellbeing.

Here are some of our top tips for keeping you energised throughout your shift:

💧Water is your best friend. This has been a huge talking point recently… if you’re new to an area, check where you can keep your water bottle and keep taking regular swigs! Dehydration has a huge effect upon serotonin and cortisol levels. If you’re feeling stressed, just taking 30 seconds for some deep breaths and a drink can help to refocus your thoughts!

🌈Eat the rainbow! Leafy greens, wholegrains and fresh fruit are an ideal way to get in all the right sorts of complex carbs, natural sugars and vitamins to keep your mind fresh.

🥕Snack for fullness, not just a quick fix - preparation is key here! Try packing some small boxes that you can grab if you’re in a rush during your break. Carrot sticks and hummus or a handful of nuts offer longer lasting fullness than sugary alternatives.

🍫And for one small dose of chocolatey goodness, why not swap your usual treat for a few pieces of dark chocolate? It’ll give you the sugar hit you need and also contains a range of antioxidants… so you can tick that superfood off the list!

It’s easier said than done, and sometimes you do just need to order that team pizza during a tough run of night shifts 🍕we hear you!

But try experimenting to see whether you notice a difference in your mood, motivation and general wellbeing by being mindful of what you’re fuelling yourself with 🙌🏼
